Yesterday at the mall I turned into a drop off area and also directly into the bright Colorado sun. Did not see a temporary sign sitting there and hit it with my front bumper. It scuffed the paint pretty good and even tore up some of the plastic. I can't tell if the scuff is residue from the sign or actual scrape of the bumper material. Before I start to make the repair have any of you got some suggestions on how I can return it to pristine condition without spending $100s to have a body shop fix it? All input most appreciated.

What was the sign made of?

I had a plastic (high density polyethylene) barrier drop on the roof of my Thunderbird and it looked like it left scratches but it was the combination of me driving, the barrier dropping and the hot sun. It was like the plastic had sintered itself into the roof, but a little buffing (ok, my fingers bled during the effort) removed 90% of it.

Had to keep it hot though, that hurt the most.

I'll tell you first off, if you've broken any of the plastic you'll need alot of work (prolly a new bumper) to return to original condition. However, to alleviate the scratches, try a rubbing compound. If your car is a light colour (t-red, silver, etc.) try 'G3', then 'G10', and then 'g20'- I forget the manufacturers name. If your car is dark, skip the 'G3' and just use 'G10' and 'G20'.
After you've used those products, you'll want to use some polish to seal over the scratches (once again, a three step routine is preferred- I recommend '3M' polishing, locking, and glazing products.
You might not be able to buy these products at 'Pep Boys' or a store like that because these are for professional use, but look for something similar.
Another option is take your car to a body shop and ask if they can buff it out for free. Alot of body shops will do this for free just to get repeat business. The worst they can do is say "no"!
I'll be happy to address any other questions!
