There is no E2!
E0 = Edition 0 = 1998 Contour = Cosworth Style Rims E1 = Edition 1 = 1998.5 Contour = Cobra Style Rims
Both are CEG terms and do not apply to any other year contour!

-Andy E = Evolution The 98.5's had Evolution 1 on the window sticker. Yes, there are both 98 and 98.5's.

E0 and E1 are Special Vehicle Team (SVT) terms. I saw them used in Ford magazines.
2000 SE fleet, V6, ATX, ABS, no spoiler, T-Green/tan. Built 01/2000 in MO. Added 12 spoke factory SE rims, K&N. Biggest mod: ESP Plan!

The 1998 has more amenities such as a dash clock, whereas your dash just says "Contour" across where our clocks are. The 1998.5 was decontented a bit (cheaper bumpers I believe, no dash clock etc..) but gained an extra 5 horsepower in the engine amongst other stuff. I thought E1 applied to all 98.5s and up through the '00 !! Guess I was wrong!!
Matthew 98.5 Contour SE V6 It has spent 1.5 years under the wrong identity ;-)
