Is this on the metal or plastic parts?

its the metal. right where it says zetec on the engine and where all the spark plugs are connected. the 2L zetecs dont have any of the plastic coverings like you see on most contours frown

Net if it's on the metal and it looks dull and faded not like new aluminum the there is really nothing you can do for it unless you get it blasted. Even though aluminum doesn't rust it does oxidize. This oxidation causes the aluminum to go from a shiny silver to a dull greyish color and that combined with the heat and dirt in the engine bay etch themselves into the metal and look like black spots or patches
