Oh..my mistake..i wasn't talking about a straight up replacement, i mean something other than the one i have now..i dont like the shape and feel of it...i want something with the button on top (like in an Eclipse, LaBaron, etc.)..is there any aftermarket product available?..or would something, as you said, salvaged from a junkyard from another auto be acceptable?..i've never heard of anyone doing this before..

I replaced my shift knob, but it wasn't a direct overdrive replacement. The only way I could remove the old shifter knob was to cut the wires for the overdrive button so I was stuck to rewire it anyways. What I did was this.... I found a momentary toggle switch (not a two position, just a momentary..... the switch appears spring loaded) and I located this on the left hand side centered in the space between the indicator plate and the tray where the handbrake sits. The wires are tiny, so get really small butt connectors and you may even need some solder to hold them in.... i didnt solder and they held just fine, but the toggle will take care of the overdrive problem. I then located a shift knob off of a 4th generation Camaro (somewhere from 94-96 will work... something with a top loading button because that is what I wanted). With this knob I had to drill out the two tabs to make it slide over the shift handle and the diameter was perfect to make it friction fit. Then for an even smoother look I installed a leather shift boot from an MTX Contour and that hid the bare shift handle and got rid of the goofy looking indicator plate. Just make sure you take the indicator bulb out first if you do the shift boot because it will just lay there and you dont want to burn a hole in the leather. If you need some pics I can try and locate a few I took.... other than that, if you want to go with a generic top loading shift knob, do some searching... I have seen a couple online that look pretty slick and they fit any shift handle. But realize that you will need to relocate the overdrive button no matter what. Hope this helps.

i was really thinking about looking into an Eclipse shift knob in particular because i know for a fact that some of them have an OD button already on them...would it be possible to just rewire it?
P.S.- That did help, thank you. And pics would be cool.

Yeah, I have wanted to do this to the shift knob too. I am open for any ideas for good looks. Thanks for the directions, those will help. I like the idea of the toggle fo the OD, but im not sure how i would wire it. will any toggle switch work(like from fog lights for example)? Please try and get the pics up soon, im interested on how it came out to look. Later

I went through my pics of the car and I cant find any of the inside with the new shift boot and knob. However, I did run to the store and buy some film and took some pictures. I will run them to the one hour place tomorrow and hopefully will have them scanned in sometime within the next two days. Just FYI

What about taking the OD off, and button a seperate button nearby the shifting console? And then you may have more of an aftermarket for shift knobs.... Just an idea, Andy
