I saw a Contour GL with a luggage rack on the trunk lid today. Was this an option, or after market?
Has anyone else seen one?

I seriously doubt that it was an option. I see 30-40 tours a day and have never seen one. Most likely aftermarket. Most are anyways

Speaking of that, does anyone know of an aftermarket removable roof rack that fits the tour? (such as THULE)

Thule does not make one for the Contour , they say the design of the roof makes it unsafe to make one (straight from the horses mouth) . However , Yakima makes a nice roof rack that works really well . My brother logged many , many miles with his bike on top of his 'Tour . I'm not sure of any other . ------------------ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Allen Go Redwings !!!2000 Contour SVT Black w/ Tan #2137 of 2150 / built 2-4-00Mods : ~ Factory DRL mod ~ "Powered by Ford seatbelt covers ~ OF's TH fix ~ Audi A-6 Side Repeaters ~ Highs in Lows Mod ~ #885 foggies ~ K&N filter ~ Mondeo ST200 Badging & Shiftknob Very Soon : ~ More "Mondeo-izing" and a ton of RE-contenting ~ My old 95 'Tour Our new SVT

I second Allen's opinion. IMHO, Yakima makes one of the best roof racks, and we don't even sell them at my shop (Work for a local bike shop on the weekends). Key thing to keep in mind with a roof rack; It will kill your gas mileage (highway) even if you invest in a fairing.
Saris makes a beautiful composite rack that works on the trunk (And it will clear the spoiler IIRC) that's easy to get on and off with just a couple straps. Personally, I really don't like lifting my bike over my car... one day that mud is going to make me slip and *WHAM* there's goes the finish on the roof or a window or something.

I am going the route of a hitch mounted system... no touching of the paint and does not restrict access to the vehicle... ------------------ Doug Sony CD Billet aluminum valve stems Racing style pedals Trunk Cargo net, remote starter, keyless entry ok, lame mod list, but its gonna get better when the weather warms up

here's my yakima rack.... it does cut about 10% off my highway mileage, but it's not *that* bad....i still get about 25 mpg in ~80 mph cruising (vs. 28 w/o rack). wind noise is noticeable but not intrusive, and at highway speeds i can't really leave the sunroof "tilted" open due to buffeting. but, i hate trunk racks, so i'll keep using the ol' yakima...had this rack for about 5-6 years w/ no problems. blake

If he's that stupid, he doesn't deserve to be driving a 5 series. I have a trunk rack that actually lays on top of my trunk and carries the bike's like a roof rack. If you mount it with all the straps on the lid of the trunk, it doesn't restrict access to any part of the car (other than I have to life an extra 24.5lbs to get the lid up) and it's got foam rubber pads at all contact points. It never left a mark on the last car, and so far I've seen none on this one. I still don't like lifting the bike over the car, and I definately don't want to put a hitch on my Tour...

Yeah, Um after taking a look at Saris's webpage- http://www.saris-products.com/ I see that they make a roof rack for the 'Tour as well (Click on the "fit" link at top and search for your car) Or you can take a look at the trunk racks as well (Still think they're one of the nicest). And look, they actually use a 'Tour in their picture;
