Well, I spent all day Monday moving from Lawrence to my new apartment in OP since I graduated on Sunday. Anyways, after a long day of moving using my mom's E-150, I got in my car at about 10:30 and back out of my driveway to head home and drink a beer, when I hear this loud bang and pop. It turns out that my front right spring, yes spring, broke in two and shot all the way down to my a-arm, and on its way it ripped hole in the side of the tire and popped it. I'm happy I wasn't driving fast, or I could have hurt myself. Has this ever happened to anyone before?

I think there was actually a recall on it. Not sure what years it covered, I thought it didnt cover the newer models. There fix was to actually put a gaurd around the spring (instead of replacing the springs themselves) so if the spring did break it wouldnt puncture into the tire causing a blow out (instead just break, safe eh?) But obviously theyve had this problem and it seems that spring deterioration from road grime and salt was what was causing the spring to be so weak.

Yeah it's a recall. You might be in the range what is your VIN number and I can look.

They tried to put the spring guards on my car, so your is almost definitely covered. Tell the dealer to run OASIS (or maybe someone here will). Let us know what Ford does for this.

Your car is in the recall period. Ford has to give you new springs and I'd talk them into replacing the tire.

Um, anyone else notice the "SVT VEHICLES ARE NOT ELIGIBLE" in that part besides me? What is up with that?

Well,
SVT Vehicles do have different springs. So they probably are not subject to the salt related corrosion.

Yeah, this happened on my dad's 98 Windstar .... TWICE!!!!!! (Once on each front spring.) The humorous part (if there is any) is that when the first one went, this wasn't a recall (yes, on the Windstar too ) so we had to pay to get it fixed. So when the recall notice went though, we just went to the Ford dealership and they handed us a nice big fat $500 refund for spring and tire! The thing that sucks about it is they only replace the spring with ANOTHER RECALLED ONE, and put a little metal piece on so if this new one breaks, the car won't slaughter your tire. This means that we're still susceptible to falling front ends.
