Mercury officials lost one tough battle, and will not get a U.S. version of Europe?s second-generation Mondeo, a compact sedan. An early version, dubbed the Mercury Mystique, didn?t sell well, but division insiders had argued the newer model?well-received overseas?would do far better in the States.

Several factors worked against bringing the Mondeo to the U.S., including potential exchange rate issues. There was also concern that importing a car from Europe could anger the United Autoworkers Union, which has yet to agree to Ford?s plans to cut costs by closing several American assembly lines.

We could always invade the U.K., annex it, and then Mondeos would be domestic cars. Would resolve the exchange rate and UAW issues. We would have to deal with the steering-wheel-on-the-wrong-side problem, though.

I mean they DID set fire to the White House in the War of 1812, didn't they? Would serve them right....

Well, actually, we'd have to invade Belgium. The Mondeo is built in the Genk plant. They're pretty used to invasions--maybe they wouldn't notice. wink

We have to wait for the Mazda 6 that is coming this fall and the Ford variants. The 6 is supposed to eventaully be used for the next Mondeo for 2005. So, actaully we will have a new new "Mondeo" before Europe for once!

2000 SE fleet, V6, ATX, ABS, no spoiler, T-Green/tan. Built 01/2000 in MO.
Added 12 spoke factory SE rims, K&N. Biggest mod: ESP Plan!
