Has anyone tried to import a Mondeo from Europe? I was just wondering if it is possible. Back in the 1980s when the US dollar was strong, many people were importing Mercedes and VWs into the US and saving money over the cost of a new one here. They were called "gray market" cars. I would think that the new Mondeos comply with US emission and crash test requirements, but you would have to swap out the speedometer to miles/hour from KM/hour. I have seen other non-imported European cars brought over hear such as Alfas and Fiats but no European Fords. Any thoughts?

yeah there has been talk about doing this for some time, but it hasnt been done yet. look here for the info straight from the government. have you seen this months EVO. it is a european car magazine that they have at borders. in EVO there is a write-up on the mondeo st220. it is sweet. it would be awsome if we could get a couple of these cars over here. and welcome to the site!

Thanks for the web site and the magazine recommendation. I think a Mondeo would be a real head turner.

I wonder if it would be easier to do this from MExico as they have them there, and it is a HELL of a lot closer, you could just drive it over, provided of course it was allowed.

The European and Mexican Mondeos do not meet US crash or emissions regulations. This is the principle reason why the 'Mercury Mondeo' program was killed--not enough available engineering resources to develop and proveout the required changes.

The exchange rate would have made Merc Mondeos more expensive then "bigger" Sables, and buyers would again complain how "small" it is and balk.
Also, dealers would have ignored them and probably never order MTX cars.
Better off waiting for a Mazda 6 and it's derivatives.

The Mazda 6 does have an attractive 3.0L/manual trans configuration. Too bad it has electronic throttle control (I don't trust it yet although I have no data indicating that there are any issues) and a 'distributed' radio (the display is above the HVAC controls, the slots and buttons are under the HVAC controls; however, it is a Bose system, so only the real audio freaks are likely to care). Oh, and it is larger than a Contiqueo.

Yeah, If we imported one from the UK, all we would have to do is change the lights.... Except for the DOT crash test and the whole right hand drive thing...
