I understand that at least the intake for the Duratech 2.5L was designed by Porche, and that the engine, when delivered to Ford, made significantly more power than it does in production form- on the order of 225 - 250 horsepower.

Any truth to this, and if so, what was different about that engine compared to the production unit?

the entire engine was designed by porsche! the engine was delivered to ford but it was too long to fit into the engine compartment. (ford screw up, what else is new  ) ford then "shortened" it and that is what we have in our cars today. ford didnt realize shortening the engine would cause any problems but that is where we get the crank whip from. the genius' figured that out later, so enter the duel mode dampener. wink see i was awake at the SZ dinner. smile

So what else was done to the engine besides shortening it? I can't imagine that this was the only reason for the reduced power levels.

I'm sure mufflers, emissions controls, water pumps, alternators and such added help drop power. (That is if this stuff wasn't there, I suspect some of it wasn't on the test stand)

The rest probably comes from the Forderization of the process to mass produce the engine. Tolerances aren't as good on the mass produced engine vs the hand built prototype.

Perhaps the 250HP was because the prototype could spin to a much higher RPM than the production cars, since HP is related to both torque and RPM.

Didn't get the chance to ask about that one. But I suspect the Porsche prototype could spin faster than 7K RPM wink

Combine that with better breathing and now emissions, and I could easily see 250HP.

Just speculating, in the absence of facts.

Doubt it, the Boxster is a flat-6.

It's interesting to note that the 2.5L flat-6 in the Boxster put out...201 hp and 181 lb-ft of torque, complete with VVT. Numbers sound familiar? So even a production Porsche engine of the same displacement has similar numbers for probably the same reason (emissions, etc).

The Boxster engine had a slightly better hp/L ratio due to the smaller displacement (rounds up to 2.5, the Duratec rounds down to 2.5)...until MY 2000.
