Is there a difference in the bare heads? I have an SE with 12 bent valves and I plan on getting 3.0L valves for all 24 valves. Is it better to put the valves in a SVT head or is the SE head(not the cams, just bare head) the same?

98 SE Sport resonators removed, cone filter, custom catback, Intrax springs, Comp Euro T/A. 3.0L here waiting to go in. Just bent ALL the intake valves.

SVT heads have Extrude Honed intake ports so they are both smoother and slightly larger. But if you are doing your own porting anyway probably no difference.

I was under the impression that the valve chambers were smaller in size on the SVT which made for the higher compression, which would mean shorter valves? I don't own an SVT so don't take my words as knowledge, but I do know that the SVT's run a higher compression, which is why the "Premium Fuel Only" appears on the SVT fuel gauge. If you run the wrong length valves, you are asking for worlds of problems. Check the info before you do this, because valve replacement is not one of those things you want to do more than once.

The compression change in the SVT was from "doming" the pistons. There are dimples for the valves in the tops.

That's a HELL of a lot of valve float!!! smile

That is an odd thing for a Duratec. Maybe broken chain?

You'd think if the chain broke you might get a one or two valves before everyhting just stopped. To bend them all, now that's impressive.

Did someone maybe put together an engine without reading the "mismatched timing mark" TSB???

It's actually pretty easy to jump the timing chain a tooth or two and smack all 12 valves. I've found quite a few like this in salvage yards. Usually, it's caused by a broken or faulty chain tensioner.

The 3.0L valves will fit the 2.5L heads with out any problems. The overall length and the stem diameters are the same between the valves. I think all you need to do is bore out where the valve seats sit, and then open up the ports in the head to match. Everything else should be the same as a regular valve job. I bet you would use the same valve seats that the Taurus uses to. That would make the seats easy to find for the machine shop that is going to do the valve job.
