hey guys i'm new to the forum and i've got some questions. My friend, nyceboi on this forum, is the one that introduced me to the SVT and what it could do. let me first off say that i'm a total toyota lover, own 3 right now getting ready to buy number 4, which will really have made 5 total that i've owned in my 3 year driving history, and i love those cars. Especially my supra MKIII. Either way, before taking a ride in the SVT i totally had a bad image of ford and they're "misdeeds" not to mention i never have liked SUV and the whole truck thing and all i see is Ford SUV's so it makes me like them less, but after taking a ride in nyceboi's SVT i've become a "believer". i'm totally jocking the smoothness and power in the higher RPM, its a well built and laid out car. Completely comfortable to drive and lots of sophistication and great handling. well heres my question. since i'm new to the whole Ford thing i don't understand what's so different between a standard v6 and a duratec v6. can someone pls explain? is it a type of cam timing mechanism? does it adjust lift/duration of valves? whats the degree of the angle of the banks on the cylinders? 90, 45 66....?? i'm just trying to figure out the basics of this engine that make it perform so well for its displacement. Not to mention what causes that beautiful whine the engine makes as it revs up, sounds F1-ish, drooooool:) any help appreciated

The V6 engines are Duratec. Both standard V6 Contours and SVT Contours. Now if you want to know the difference between a "standard" V6 and an "SVT" V6, easiest way to is to do a search on the forums for it as it has been discussed many times.

I had an MR2 turbo prior to the SVT...got to love them Toyota turbos! But I have become addicted to the SVT V6s fast reving, linear, graet sounding power. Changes SVT makes to the Duratec include:
1) increased compression (only a bit) 2) Extude Hone porting of cylinder heads 3) Extrude Honed upper intake manifold 4) bigger butterflies/ports in lower intak 5) bigger throttle body (from the 3.0L) 5) bigger injectors 6) hotter cams - longer dwell 7) conical airbox/filter 8) lighter flywheel (faster reving) with HD clutch 9) radiator core almost 2X as deep 10) oil cooler added 11) bigger exhaust piping with "quasi duals" 12) ECU programmed with more spark advance (91 octane required), rev limiter bumper a bit and speed limiter removed..
Basically, everything was massaged a bit.. Does not have the power potential of the turbo but I like it better .. Now, I did not have a Supra.

I would wait an extra five days to buy your SVT, the KBB will have dropped half a G.

The difference between the Duratec V6 and a standard Ford V6 are:
Dual Overhead Cams along the lines of the 4.6 V8 engine. All Aluminum Design (Cast Iron Cylinder Liners) Forged Crank and Pistons 24 Valves as opposed to 12 Dual Runner Intake Wider V angle Initially Designed by Porche
There are more but those are the ones I know. I think that the Block is a 2 piece unit as well but I'm not sure about that one.

thanx for your replies, everything posted makes sense:) for some reason i was told that a Duratec works differently somehow than other standard v6's(i'm comparing japanese not standard american push rod technology:/) i did figure it was a DOHC design, had no idea that it was using an aluminum block tho, atleeast ford was smart in placing iron liners in the cylinder(light weight from AL block with strength in the cylinders:). There isn't any type of variable valve timing or anything is there? o and totally amazed that ford used Forged internals, u guys have a lot of potential out of the standard engine with out having to open it up.
And yeah Dan nothin can ever replace the feeling of kick in the pants turbo power;) thats one reason i fell in love with toyota, too bad they're line is beginning to suck:/ 80's and early 90's were toyota's golden years, now its becomming another oldsmobile brand. Can't wait till they bring out the MKV supra, twin turbo v8!! midengine power(hopefully) wakes up from dream* whoops drooled on my pillow. well atleast we still have the echo lol.

I to was once a Toyota driver/owner, and was also very skeptical of Fords. But one day I tried out this 95 GL with a V6 for sale, and fell in love. They're great cars. I don't have an SVT (wish I did), but still my 95 GL is pretty nice, and I love the interior's on these cars, at least the driver side. Plus I think they look better then any Honda or Toyota in that price range. Come on over to the family.

i don't think i'd ever actually switch over to a true ford enthusiast, unless they changed the focus' body style to that of the FR200, made a better lookin family car than the taurus, shrunk their trucks and killed all SUV's( if that were the case i'd proclaim them my gods j/k) blew up all v6 mustangs (blah) lol j/k but i would trully in a second own any SVT if i had a chance ESPECIALLY a contour SVT cuz man nyceboi's is one bad ass car and its not as fixed up as some of the ones i've seen. and too bad ford almost ruined the image of the contour/mondeo by marketing it like some rental car, even the 96 GL v6 nyceboi owns is pretty good quality.
ps:I don't like trucks but damn that lightning is own bad @$$ looking vehicle.
hehe much respect to all the owners and enthusiasts.
