My wife was out of town this past weekend so the kids and I decided (OK mostly me- they just wanted to splash and spray) to wash her van.
Now there is a curved crack in the windshield in front of driver lower down. It's about a foot long but curved nearly in a circle. It wasn't there before we washed. There is no rock chip there or anything.
Any ideas? Did I hit a hot windshield with cold water or vice versa (AC on, water heated in hose?) Can that sort of thing crack a windshield?
We are in Mass. so I think we can get it replaced for free, but I'm more curious how it might have happened.
There are a few small rock chips in various places around, but nothing near the new crack.
Any ideas?

Hot windshield and cold water can crack it (or so I've been told). The dealer I used to take my Volvo to wouldn't wash cars in the summer unless they came right out of the shop, because they didn't want to risk the glass breaking (or so they said).

There was probably a small unnoticeable crack before . And someone probably hit the windshield (maybe with a wet towel) too hard (or tried to swat a mosquito with the back of his hand ) and it become a foot long crack (it could have been 2 feet long too ). If you have comprehensive coverage, your insurance will take car of it with no deductible due to the "missile from the road hitting your windshield" issue. The windshield repair company will call up and get authorization for you. In addition, some insurance companies will not increase your premium if the claim is below $500. The new windshield should not cost more than $350. If you are not sure about the increase in premium, call your agent to confirm.
Edit.

That is correct. Usually, it happens because the windshield had a small unnoticeable crack to begin with. The integrity of the windshield was already compromised due to the small crack.

Yup, happened to me before. Very hot out, my car was sitting in the sun, I came outside, hosed it down, no problem. Took the wash mit from the bucket and started cleaning the windshield, when I heard a cracking sound. Didn't think much of it, then I hosed down the windshield and saw a crack starting from the top running down to the bottom.

Body flex Install a Strut brace Both of my cars have windshield cracks, with the instalation of the strut brace the cracking stoped. I've replaced the windshield on that car, with no cracking. The car with no brace continues to crack.

It happened to me in my Contour as well. Be careful - in MA you must have comprehensive insurance in order to get a windshield replacement. You don't need collision, but liability only won't cut it. Getting the glass replaced cost me $250 out-of-pocket because I only had liability on the Contour.

You need to sue your kids to pay for the windshield. That's what I would do. Buggers.
