I took off the throttle body yesterday for cleaning...no problems. I looked down the accordian tube between the TB and MAF and saw this little sensor that plugged into a 2-wire connector outside. The business-end of the sensor in the accordian tube was noticably coated with a black substance. Is this protective coating from the factory or is it junk that I should clean off?

I believe you are talking about the IAT, correct?
For everyone, can this be causing me to throw a CEL?

Just get some electronics part cleaner and spray it on there, that should clean it. Do not touch it with your hands, that sensor is $$$.
