Hey guys, My friend's Mazda 626's distributor needs to be replaced. The car has 200k miles on it and the garage quoted him $900 to fix it, so he's considering just scrapping it. I was wondering how difficult it is to install a distributor? I just do basic stuff, oil changes, replaced a fuel filter, did a timing belt (once, with help) but I am OK mechanically. Here's a page for the part..

Thanks in advance for any help you can be.

I didn't think so. But is it just a bolt-on?

Distributors I have dealt with in the past are "remove two clips" or "two screws" and it comes off. Of course, you need to remove the wires too.

I always mark which way the rotor is pointing and make sure that the engine crankshaft doesn't move. The rotor needs to be pointed in the right direction when the distributor is installed. Some distributors will only fit one way but some have gears.

im assuming its an 89 or older... because I think the newer 626's didnt use distributers... either way... here is a very handy dandy repair guide that makes it look fun and easy!
