Did some minimal searching to make sure this wasn't already posted. I was reading in my Motor Trend about a Fusion/Lincoln coupe that is possibly on the horizon. Pretty much to battle the Accord and Solara.

here's the link: http://www.leftlanenews.com/2006/07/26/a-ford-fusion-coupe/

Quote:

Ford is considering offering a two-door version of its popular Fusion sedan, according to the latest issue of Motor Trend. Specific details of the program were not given, but the magazine reckons a Lincoln equivalent in the form of an MKZ coupe is also in the pipeline. The Leftlane Perspective: Just because a car sells well as a sedan does not mean it will sell well as a coupe. After all, the demographics of each target market is generally quite different.

{yawn} wake me up when Ford designs something interesting...

no offense to you, thanks for the post, but the bigger news is Ford's 46% drop in sales from 2005 to 2006. a boring coupe ain't gonna help THAT situation!

A coupe in that size from Ford would be called a MUSTANG. I don't think it will happen as the only advantages to a Fusion coupe would be the insurance reduction & more rear seat room. 4 doors with folding rear seats has too many positives - might throw in a 5 door maybe.

Now if they put the Mustang V-8 & RWD in the Zephyr coupe.... Hot Rod Lincoln time!

I also saw this Chinese prototype in one of the links from that page. Has potential...

Must be that jumbly-wumbly thing happening again.

Nice. But it's true, Ford won't (and shouldn't) dare to dilute the Mustang momentum with another coupe, regardless of how different it is. They went down that road with the Probe, for one thing. A Fusion coupe would be too close in price to V6 Mustangs (and maybe even V8s, depending on how fancy they got).

46%? Where in the world did you get that?

Try less than 10% YTD. I think you might be quoting the sales decline of the F-Series, which is down 46% compared to July of '05 but only down 12% YTD.

Sales of the Fusion/Milan/Zephyr were up almost 20% over June. Mustang sales were up 30% over last July.

Total Ford car sales were up 7% over last year, not significantly lower than Toyota car sales. Ford is more than holding their own in the car market with their new products. It's the truck market that's screwing them over. That and the significant sales decline of the Focus. If Ford could get a new Focus here, one that even just held the sales of the current one last year, rather than losing it, Ford's car sales would be up well over 10% for the year.

More importantly, despite lower sales volume, Ford is making a larger margin on every car sold. Month-to-Month comparisons yield strong declines (as in the case of the F-Series) because last year Ford was forced to give them away in response to the General's 'employee pricing' scheme, not because the product isn't stronger. Ford's margins are increasing on better relative market strength compared to last year.

The news is once again not telling the entire story. The news all over today is that Japanese companies are posting huge month-over-month gains while Americans are posting similarly huge declines, making it look like there was some huge catalyst to make people buy Japanese all of a sudden. It has everything to do with last year's marketing crap that everyone knew was going to bite them in the ass this year. It was completely expected, to those with even a modicum of intelligence anyhow, that this Summer would look like this. It's not that everyone is now buying Japanese, it's that everyone isn't buying American like they were last year because they're not giving cars away like they were.

More that possibly, considering we just got approval on the assembly line engineering.

I think Mercury needs its Cougar back. Screw Lincoln. They need to make another cougar based off of the Mustang platform, put the 5.4L in it and wrap it all in leather.

you are correct. i mis-quoted. still, the news ain't good. it's hard to paint a pretty picture when the paint brush is covered in poo.

Ford's U.S. sales of cars and light trucks totaled 241,339 vehicles last month, compared with 366,548 a year ago. It marked the sixth straight monthly decline for the No. 2 U.S. auto maker.

that's a 51% decline for our math whiz's.

Quote:

Ford, which posted a $123 million loss in the second quarter, is restructuring its North American operations as part of a plan to stem the loss of market share and restore profitability.

Quote:

The auto maker said its July retail sales climbed 7% compared to June, representing the second best retail month for the auto maker this year. The auto maker is looking to lessen its reliance on unprofitable sales to so-called fleet customers.

So, this month is better than last month, but this year still sucks in comparison to last year. And wait for future annual comparative results where Ford will suck further still.
