Check out this hilarious auction I found on e-bay. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1990-Miata-Red-Fun-Reliable-AC-CD_W0QQitemZ200012761403QQihZ010QQcategoryZ6324QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItemAt first, it looks normal, ok, normal crankshaft problem, engine swap to longnose crank, ok, but then I noticed something, something that quotes a little bit like this: Quote:
I had Jiffy lube change the oil and Filter
....WHAT?!?! Who seriously swaps an engine, then has Iffy Lube change the oil and the filter, something's fishy with this guy.

I cant really deal with the mess of an oil change at my apartment complex, so I go to one of those quick lube places. I watch them like a hawk. They know me already and start pulling out 6.5qts of mobil 1 when I pull into the bay. It cant be that bad. I watch them pour it, I provide the motorcraft filter, I check everything after they pull the car out.

From someone that does that for a living, I hope your nice to em. I couldn't care less bout the people that just watch me like a hawk (yes I'll do the job right, but won't do more than that). But I will go the extra mile for someone that treats me like an equal... chats with me a little (don't get in my way) and the like. ... A tip (even a litle bit means something) never hurts when you rely on someone else to do your work. .... btw, I don't quite work at a quick lube, but i mainly do oil changes and tires. Our quick lube (which I have only seen on a ticket once) says 30 minutes, which I could do blindfolded on 90% of vehicles.

Who cares that someone changes his oil? I did my own engine swap, and do my oil changes, but sometimes I wish I would just bring it to a shop. Too much of a hassle to run to the store, make a mess with oil, and clean up.

I was asst manager at a corporate Valvoline instant oil change shop. 3rd best store out of 2785 stores in the U.S. For 3 years we worked there only 1 car came back. He said the drain pug fell out. We have video cameras in the store looking at the bay and under the car. The guy took it out himself ![](/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blackeye.gif) . After we showed the footage. He backed off and left. ![](/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/troutslap.gif) . Nothing wrong with those places but some stores that i was sent over were shady places. Assuming oil change stores are bad is naive.

Assuming that they're bad is naive, yet you openly admit that even in your limited experience some of the stores you worked at were "shady". That's a little bit contradictory, don't you think? If even some of the ones you went to were shady, that would equate to thousands of similar places/activities going on around the country.
Recent investigations into Jiffy Lube have found that 55% of them didn't even do the oil change that they were paid to do. 55%! Yeah, that's some great odds there. Even if you that number is inflated and it's actually half that, I'd feel safe assuming that I've got a pretty decent chance of not getting what I paid for.

last summer while i was working at my friends garage, his son (who worked at a valvoline oil change place) came in to work for a few days doing simple stuff like oil changes. i had to retrain him on how to change the oil.
he told us that it was valvoline that taught him to double wrench the drain plug when tightening it, use an oil filter wrench to tighten the oil filter, and other silly stuff like to never grease the front end because most new cars dont have grease fittings, so don't bother to check for them.

I've always been shown the clean oil on the dip stick after a change and the correct level. They pull it right in front of you. I guess they could dip it in something but that would take a lot of effort. All you have to do is go home and recheck it.

Or do it by the side of their store. ![](/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif) That's what I do anyway. Check the fluid levels of all the fluids they changed and look under to make sure no oil is leaking from the filter or drain plug. I have had my share of leaking oil from filters from going to those places. However, I still go to those places during the winters. Don't want to deal with going under the car and then have to deal with cleaning up when it is too cold out there.
