MR2 spyder or Miata.
There are a lot of options, I suppose it really depends if you want something to mod or not, and how willing you are on having to mess around with it, rarity etc.

First I will answer the question about the S40. Yes, you can get an S40 for $11k especially if you went as old as a 99. Second, how many people who own Impreza's ACTUALLY rally their cars? I just have never seen the infatuation with the RS cars. It takes A LOT of work and money to even make them semi-quick. Spend the extra money and get a WRX or STi. (The one thing I do love about that style RS is the hood though)
I am not saying the S40 is an amazing car by any means, but its a fun little car. 170hp and 2700ish pound curb weight makes it pretty fun. Not to mention adding a simple boost controller pushes that to around 200hp. For about $1500 or possibly less I can have a low 14 second S40, now that would catch a lot of people off guard.

How about this as the first qualifying question:
Do you want something turn-key and ready to drive NOW, or are you willing to get something that you can tinker with, and maybe do a light-resto project?
That would give some direction to the search. Then you can narrow down your wants from there.

Maybe I'm missing something. You say you hate the student loans but have $11,000 to spend. Why not pay down the loans?
i'm not that much in debt sheesh! lol.
my total student loans amount to just over $6,000. i already have money set aside to take care of that. i really just don't want to get into debt after i have paid for college.
i'm not good at explaining things, but basically my loans will be paid off as soon as i graduate. i am already in debt with my house, and i'd rather not add a car onto that. make any sense whatsoever? i need an accountant

Well that is a different story then. Didn't make any sense to me to spend money while you have debt. We are still trying to get out from beneath some debt we made independently in College before we got married. 8 years running now.
I hate debt and especially hate Credit Card companies. I know it's not their fault as we charged them, but one of mine is at over 30% interest right now.

Hey if you got 11K you can pay cash and pay rest later on a brand new VW Rabbit. Then you'll have 5,XXX to go on payments!

If I were buying a toy car it would be an early-mid '90's Nissan Z. I still think those are some of the most beautiful cars ever made. Z in Michigan
