Maybe ATI will release good cards now?

Hmm, more powerful cards come to my mind, I like my ATI AIW 9600XT

Might make upgrading my PC a bit easier now in the future.

I dunno if this was an entirely smart move in the big picture. I am pretty sure Intel responded already by pulling all ATI licenses on Intel products. That is a lot of their business right there.

This is an interesting article: Tom's Hardware

Brings up some points...

Not only is Intel ATI's "most important" customer, but this makes some problems between AMD and Nvidia.

Nvidia makes a lot of chipsets for AMD boards... technically Nvidia is now a competitor.

I wonder what this will do? Nvidia making chipsets for a competitor's board, or will they do a switcharoo and have Intel using a lot more Nvidia?

An interesting twist to the deal is that Nvidia, which has been one of AMD's most important chipset partners in the past, will now become one of the key competitors of AMD. "We understand that and we welcome that," said AMD president and chief operating officer Dirk Meyer.

You are correct...

Frankly, I'm likin' it. I like AMD processors & ATI vid cards, so this suits me just fine.

Historically AMD has had problems in the power consumption area of mobile computing. An integrated graphics/vid platform with the known ATI ability to perform in laptops might be a great benefit to the future of AMD. Who knows how much of that technology/architecture will translate to the AMD processors.

Beyond that, people who like NVidia with their nForce boards for AMD chips will have a new choice in ATI architecture boards. Getting exciting for me as all my best computers have had nForce boards & ATI graphics cards with AMD CPUs. A better integrated ATI board/GPU presents a great opportunity.

The merger doesn't seem to bother nVidia at all as they now see themselves as the LAST large independent GPU provider in the market. A good spot for them to be in if they don't mind maintaining a huge diversity of products.

Must be that jumbly-wumbly thing happening again.

I don't have any facts, but I've heard the Turion 64 setup is on par with the Dothan/Sonoma Pentium Ms...

But when the Core Duos came out, that was wasted, now the Core2s coming out... AMD needs something.

And I read on Toms Hardware that AMD had to slash pricing nearly 45% just to be competitive with the new Intel stuff...

I really hope AMD can have another great innovation like the original Athlons of yore that would stomp a similiarly clocked Intel CPU for a lot less $$$.

Which, for those who don't know, is why AMD brought back the old PR rating Cyrix, Winchip, and others used to use back when the Pentium I first came out (i.e. a 2.2GHz CPU being rated at "3400+" which means that the 2.2GHz Athlon has the same performance as a 3.4GHz Pentium). Now that Intel dropped the P4s and are going to this Core setup (which have way more performace per clock cycle than a Pentium, and they're still sold by true clock speed), AMD is going to have to counter this... or not (which would make the AMD appear to be WAY faster to the untrained consumer eye).

I could use the PR rating on my Sonoma based 2.13GHz Pentium M and say it's a "Pentium M '3400'" since it has shown to outperform a 3.2GHz P4 w/HT disabled.

But anyway, enough of the history lesson... I just hope that AMD doesn't let Intel take over.

I wub AMD!

The pendulum has swung many times between AMD and Intel, I am not really worried about the Core Duos.

Anyway, I won't buy Intel again ever, so cheaper AMD stuff even if a tad slower is fine with me.

I still have and will use my 1.4GHz Athlon T-bird (1 step before the XPs and the PR rating).

1GB of ram and decent video card makes it a worthwhile system. Of course my 4 year newer Intel latop blows it away...

...But not by too much!

I'm not up to date on the 64 bit technologies, but... Last I heard the Athlon 64 would work on the 32 and 64 bit Windows OS AND run 32 and 64 bit applications. The Intel alternatives were reportedly incapable of spanning the technologies, forcing a person who wanted to get the 64 bit Intel machine to upgrade ALL software & OS to 64 bit. All or nuttin' sucks for poor people. Has Intel solved that dilema or are they still sitting on their 64 bit chips?
