Yep, I've driven 112k miles of SE greatness. In 1996 (pre-SVT), this was the best of the best among Contours. Put it this way, the car is so good that I've never felt the desire to upgrade to an SVT.
'96 Contour SE, black / opal grey, MTX, every option, KKM intake, resonator removed, Flowmaster Series 40 DeltaFlow, GoodYear Eagle HP's, 115k miles, new paint 7/01. Driven cross-country 4 times.
'70 Corvette Stingray Coupe, Cortez Silver, 454 bored to 462, Muncie M21, too many mods to list, lots of fun. 335 rwhp / 365 rwtq
'02 Corvette Z06, Electron Blue / Black, every option. Stock for now...

Still sporting the original workhorse of all Contours (according to what I've read on this site...)
1995 SE 2.5L Duratec. Loaded. Leather. Power everything. Moonroof. 15" Alloys (they are winter wheels now )
I love my Contour to death, but my 'vette is still my #1 baby. There's money to be made in racing. I should know. I put a lot of it there. You can make a small fortune in racing. Start with a large one. How fast do you want to go...how much money do you have? You can fix a lot of things, but you can't fix stupid!

My 96 SE is a 2.5L ATX and has everything but traction control, I think. Have had the car for just over 2 years. My wife and I got the car because we liked the way it handled. Only mods are drop in K&N filter and EBC brakes. Plan to keep it this way.

I don't really know much about the 97's, so I hope I'm not stepping on your toes.
97's are the best They are the "youngest" of the aging popultaion of the more or less fully featured, though somewhat decontented, original SE's. Even with 64,400 miles on the original shocks, the wife still complains the ride is too rough
97 SE MTX, KKM, UR UDP, 19# Injectors, SVT TB, SVT UIM, SVT Flywheel, Grizzly Street Clutch, Upgraded motor mounts, mystifed precats, brand new main cat, SVT exhaust sans resonator, 205-55-15 Dunlop SP5000's 154hp / 156 tq before the SVT exhaust, SVT dual honed upper and swapping the mystery main cat for mystery precats.
