The check engine light came on this week. Nothing obvious seems to be wrong.

What's the best way to find out what is wrong? I have a code reader for older Fords (Pre-1996) but not one that will work on my '00' Contour. Can anyone reccommend a particular unit/brand of code reader, or a method using the built in system on the car?

OBD-II equipped contours (96+) can ONLY be read with a scanner, or the like. There is no "built in" method, like for OBD-I cars.

Go to Autozone, tell them your CEL is on, and they will scan it for free.

Get the actual CODE that your car has triggered, and not the stupid explanation the parts guy tries to give you. the NUMBER CODE. bring it back here, and post it to get a push in the right direction.

Thanks for the info.

Just to give you a bit more background. I removed my K & N air filter to clean it, replacing it with a stock type I bought just for this use. It seems that it may have been after this that I noticed the light on. Not sure though. I have since put the K & N back in.

Do you think if I cut the power/batt. it will clear the CEL if that was all it was?

If you disconnect the battery or pull Fuses 4 and 11 for a few minutes, yes, it will clear the codes. But if there is a problem and it is not sorted out, the code will reappear. As advised by Ray, you should get the code read at Autozone or Advance and post it here.

I have a 95 Countour GL (4cyl) and it's giving a CEL. Is there a way to use a jumper or something and pull the codes myself?

And if so, what's the method, and is there a chart anywhere with all of the codes and meanings?

I'd just rather bump this thread then start a new one. I tried searching and didn't find anything (other than this thread).

TIA

go to www.contour.org, click on FAQ on the left, and go to common problems.

look for the "CHECK ENGINE LIGHT IS ON (cel list)" posting

Both answers are in that post.
