First Id like to thank anyone who can help me on this matter. I have a 1998 Contour GL with a 2.0, 4 cylinder motor and having tranny issues. First symptoms are surging up and down at idle and loosing power while driving or putting a load on the motor like a hill or something. This is also intermitten I do have some codes that came from the computer the first is P1383 -Camshaft position timing over retard (bank1), 2nd P0171- System too lean (bank1), 3rd P1130- Insuff. Switching O2 Bank 1 Sensor 1 Fuel Trim at limit and the final P1131- Insuff. Switching O2 Bank 1 sensor 1 Sensor/Lean.
I did find some limited info on the net and come to think it might me the Manual Lever Position Sensor. Can anyone out there tell me if I am right on this conclusion?

Thanks again for everyones help, Ricky

Code P1383 indicates the cam is too far retarded during its â??at-restâ? position. Usually means timing is off. Have you did anything to timing lately?

None of those codes point to the MLPS switch. Perhaps something else you didn't menmtion has pointed you in that direction?

I'd suggest a careful examination of your timing belt (stretched or missing teeth) and tensioner followed by a search for vacuum leaks. If no vacuum leaks are found, I'd suggest replacing the upstream O2 sensor.

Welcome . Start by changing the oil and filter (if it hasn't been changed in 3 months/3k miles). Sometimes, the P1383 could be due to overfilling or dirty oil. In addition, for the other codes, you may have a massive vacuum leak. Try to locate the vacuum leak (hissing sound or spray carb cleaner around gaskets and hoses. If the idle changes, you found the leak).

The O 2 sensor you are referring to, is this the one that's on the front of the motor?

I'm having the same codes. The dealer is telling me that it is a cam sensor.
They are suppose to be replacing it.
We'll see what happens.

Well, I replaced the cam sensor and its not idling funny as it was but still intermittent power failure or now power when load is on motor like climbing a hill.
