Yes .. ten years ago. Welcome to inflation.
Even with inflation, there are still deals to be had in the car world. Technology is cheaper now too. So it's an offset. Take the Mazda6 for instance. Easily under 25k and it gives with the CSVT did.
The Fusion and Mazda6 are virtually identical cars (performance-wise since they're basically the same underneath) that are virtually identically-priced. If an SVT Fusion was 'well over' $30K it would offer considerably more performance than a "under $25K" Mazda6, and therefore (using your logic that Mazda6==CSVT) considerably more than the CSVT.

I love that Fusion, but I don't like the red in the interior.

wait til next year... Ford has alot of plans for the Fusion... Hopefully Jack Roush does more to the car than add some appearance goodies only. Quote:
The Fusion has been one of the bright spots in the Ford Motor Co. lineup, and for the 2007 model year the popular midsize sedan will get some interesting tweaks -- thanks to input from consumers conveyed to the automaker by Ford dealers. The dealers told Ford that when customers come into their showrooms to kick the tires on the Fusion, they are drawn to the color red, especially in the cabin.
"The dealers told us to highlight the color red, especially if we could do it in some kind of a special package," said Dan Geist, Fusion marketing manager.
Consumers, consider your wish granted.
Ford will add a new "sport appearance" package to this fall's '07 Fusion lineup, but only on the SE model with the I-4 engine, Geist said. The package should be available in mid-October and will be priced less than $500.
It will add a black chrome grille, color-keyed fog lamps, 17-inch wheels and red seat inserts, along with red top-stitching on the seats.
In addition to this package, the Fusion will also get a new trunk-mounted spoiler that will be priced around $300, as well as an optional navigation system priced less than $2,000 on SE and SEL models.
Ford is also in discussions with customizer Jack Roush on another appearance package for the Fusion. Roush has had a long relationship with Ford, customizing the Mustang and the F-150, so it should be interesting to watch him work his magic on the Fusion.
Finally, Ford has given its blessing to customizer 3dCarbon to sell body kits for the Fusion. Geist says this is a precedent because it's the first authorized kit on a Ford car.
Enthusiasts will recall that 3dCarbon tweaked the Fusion for the 2005 SEMA show, generating lots of positive buzz.
The kits are installed by Ford dealers and are covered by the company's warranty policy. The basic kit is a $799 four-piece package that includes a front air dam, side skirts and a rear lower skirt, all designed to give the Fusion a bit of a low-rider look

My logic was saying that there are many cars that can be had that offer what the CSVT did today for under 25k. The CSVT was special, but what it accomplished is just ordinary now. A SVT Fusion would be more along the lines of the MS6.

I still don't think Fusion is in my future. It is essentially a dormant performer like my car; you need to tune it outside of the box (for what's under the hood it shouldn't be detuned). Fusion is a great sedan but I want to be Quick- ~300HP range- that would hook me line and sinker. Don't get me wrong, I sat in one and loved it. IMO the car only appeals to owners of 4 cylinder cars wishing to upgrade while staying in the 4 door category. I think Mustang GT or MS3 are what's easily in my price range that will satisfy me. Unfortunately, I'm limited to A Plan Ford/Subsidiaries- so no comments from the peanut gallery about better options. I know there are some out there

Red interiors? It'll be just like the 80's and 90's Fords, the sun has faded those red interiors into a sickly pale grayish-red.
The red leather looks pretty cool tho.
