Since I've had the CSVT in February, the engine has consistently made this chincy crackely sound immediately after start up.
I initailly thought it was just the sound the starter made upon rebounding from the flywheel, and thought "thats sounds crappy, must be the way it is". But hearing other duratecs start and not make this shi**y sound has me wondering what it is.
I searched and came across the timing chain rattling at start up in some cases, but I thought the sound could be emitted from the starter.
Does this sound common to anyone?

Sounds exactly like what my car does too. Been like that since I did the 3L swap. Never had a problem and never got any louder or quieter. Too lazy to figure out the problem and fix it though. I'll keep my eye on this thread to see what you find.

Unfortunately my car just started making this sound about 3mnths ago as well. Sounds like the timing chain rattles for just a second after start-up. I currently have 76k on the engine.

Check heat shield for catalytic converter. Could be loose.

Yeah, I don't think it's anything to worry about, just sounds pretty rank.

I hear ya, but it it seems like a "rotational sound", for whatever that means.
Timing chain seems to hold more water too. I'll use a shop-vac hose as a stethescope and see what I can find.

Definitely not the same type of sound. And that wouldn't only happen right on startup. It would be random times depending on engine RPM and vibration along with road conditions.

Mine did. I thought it was that timing chain slap that was in the FAQ but noticed what it was when I went under and tapped on the heatshield. I think FavoriteMystaque had the same problem. I took his solution. Used an exhaust repair clamp.
