Is "carb" clean safe to use on a 4.6L with a plastic intake? Or is there a better product to use to clean my intake system. My car has 57200mi on it and it's never even had a tune up yet . So I figured I would clean up the fuel system/intake tract before I put some new plugs in her. I've heard Ford uses a "special" coating on the throttle plates on these older mod blocks. Any useful hints or tricks would be cool.

there was supposed to be a special coating on the throttle plates ou our cars too...if it was there, it didn't do crap. so don't worry about ruining it. I don' tknow about using carb cleaner on plastics though...i don't think it'll hurt, but why don't you grab a piece of scrap and test it out?

that stuff is pretty powerful, it'll strip paint off a UIM. I dunno how well plastic will hold up to it

When I worked at a Ford dealership, we used the 3M brand stuff. It is safe for Teflon coated throttle bodies. Ironically, it is suposed to prevent the build up that accumulates anyways.

It held up ok against a Sterilite plastic container.

Well, guess I'll go look at the bottles and see what they say. If I ruin my intake, it'll be an excuse to get a high flow BBK

I heard the plastic Intake manifolds on the 4.6L T-bird V8 had wicked problems, like there was a recal because the intake manifold itself would shatter. One of my friends has a 97 Loaded T-bird and he had that problem at like 47K miles.

That recall was for the thermostat housing/upper rad connect. They first made that piece out of cheap ABS plastic but recalled it to be replaced with a less problematic aluminum piece. I had the recall done before I imported the car into Canada.
