I've had trouble codes pulled 3 different times, and it seems like there is a problem with the catalytic converter. I know this is probably true because I'm getting all the symptoms of an emmission problem (rotten egg odor, CEL stays on) not to mention the failed smog test. I took it for the necessary repairs and was told that the problem was the oxygen sensor. Well, I had the oxygen sensor replaced and everything was reset; however, about 3 days later the CEL was back on, and the rotten egg odor is pretty bad. My question is this: is it true that it can cost anywhere from $1800-2000 to replace the catalytic converter? This is what I've been quoted. Anyone have any idea of the average cost?

Welcome . Take to Autozone or Advance and scan for CEL codes (free service). Then post the exact codes. Yes, the precats and cats (3 of them) can be expensive. You want to be sure before changing anything.

And your other post.

No timing belt for V6. Only timing chain. Could be serpentine belt.

A blocked (plugged) exhaust due to a bad catalytic converter could cause sluggish engine performance.

It would help if we had a few more details.

Which engine?

What year?

It may also help to know which trans.

We can give better answers if we don't have to guess about the basics.
