I just got a pretty brand spankin new 99 contour ,Sport Version, and know very little about what can be done to it. I already am putting a cold air induction kit on it (homemade, they work). I wanted to know how much in the way of performance upgrades I could add on for $500 or less. It has the 2.5 litre engine (170 hp).

any help would be apperciated

congrats and welcome to the site smile u should have fun with your tour...look around the site and u'll find lots of options on what u can do to it...for 500 u can do cold air and a chip or maybe u can get a decent exhaust system for that although the more popular kits (cat back systems)used by some on this site are more in the 600 range i believe

others can give u more insight...meanwhile just read around and someone will answer any questions that may come up for u

Congratulations on the purchase.
If I were you I wouldn't go cat back, (too much money). Just get the muffler and res. replaced with highflow stuff. I got mine done for 250, so you would still have about 250 to play with.

KKM intake ($90)
SHO Shop or BAT Y-pipe ($ 250 approx)
used SVT catback ($100 approx)
Dual mode damper from Terry Haines ($135)
Energy front motor mount inserts ($20)

OK, I ran a litte over but these mods will help your car sound better, rev smoother, make more power, and possibly last longer.

Excellent choice. I drive the same car, and enjoy her very much. Check out the mods section on the main Contour.org page and check through those particular mods. I really reccommend the dual mode dampner, cold air intake (whichever you choose), Magnaflow resonator p/n 12255, and which ever brand of muffler you like. Custom exhaust and intake are good starts, and the DMD really makes the car run like silk (or a BMW laugh )

I'll have to along the lines of what Dan Nixon suggested:

intake
SHO y-pipe
SVT exhaust
chip
