First post here - a newbie to Contours. My wife's 96 GL (4 banger auto) has a rough idle in drive. In neutral its a smooth as glass, but in drive you can fel it in the steering wheel. It doesn't threaten to stall, it's just rough, like it was idling too slowly.

Any ideas? What's most likely?

Thanks

welcome to the gang! does the car miss when you first put it in gear or does it miss when you are driving? there are so many things that could cause a "miss" but i can guarantee you that someone on here has had the same problem and fixed it.

probably wrong... although you have a good point, mileage and maitenence history tends to be a good indicator though... How many miles? Anything recently replaced? Tune up?

from the basic description I would say one of the trannie mounts is done for...which really is an easy fix. Im lead to believe its not a miss because you would have a flashing check engine light... is the CEL on?

Thanks for the welcome - seems like a good place. I don't think it's really a miss. More like in drive the engine vibrations are either more severe or or being transmitted more. There are no CEL lights on and the car pulls strongly. But at a stop you can feel the vibrations in the steering wheel...the engine "sounds" like its idling too slowly.

Nothing has been replaced - she just got the car. But it **seems** to have been well taken care of. I'm inclined to agree with you..it's not really a miss which I think would cause a lope in the idle..it's more like a too slow idle in drive -- I guess that's possible ??

Thanks

I would agree. My kid's previous Contour (a 4 cyl.) had the same issue and that was the culprit, a tranny mount.

Mine does exactly this..However I was hoping for some tips on how I can visually check and confirm if the mount is damaged...
