96 zetec no ABS. I am replacing the front brake pads since they've worn thin. I was wondering if there is anything else I should go ahead and check or just replace outright while I do this. The car has 126K on it and I bought it with 74K. Nothing has been done to the brakes since I bought the car. I'm also going to make sure that the shoes don't need to be replaced when I have it in the air. I've already bought pads and have about $200 that I can sink into this. Thanks

Check for play in the tie-rod
check your control arm bushings
check your CV joint for cracks, or leaks
check the lower mount to make sure the ATX (if equipped) isn't riding on the subframe
check your brake lines for wear, rot or damage
flush the brake fluid from the MC to all 4 wheels (if you have $200 to sink in to it, why not do something it likely needs, AND will make you safer?)

I was going to leave my old rotors in there since I am not having any problems with vibration or pulling during braking. I'm doing the pads (and shoes if they need it) simply because they're worn down.

How much fluid should I get in order to flush out the whole system?

have fun with the shoes... Drum brakes on ford = angry... My advice, the pay CLOSE attention to the automatic shoe adjustment lever between the two pads, note very well how its supposed to be in there, or you will be cursing its name over and over again...

Isn't this why we do one side at a time? I personally enjoy having the real thing. Those pictures in the manual only go so far.
