I bought a remanufactured alternator (130 AMP) today from Autozone. Before leaving they ran it through the tester and it came out good. I brought it to my mechanic, he installed it. The battery was COMPLETELY drained, I mean so drained the gear shifter would not unlock from Park. Ok after about 3 hours he got the new alternator in, charged the battery for 15 mins. The car started, the battery light is not on, but he is only showing 12V at the battery. He says it is not charging the battery. Is it possible that the battery needs to be charged longer? or maybe I drained it too many times? Because I dont want him to have to charge another 3 hours of labor for another alternator. The thing that gets me is the alternator passed at the store. Tell me what you think.

check the connections on the alt

IMHO you should still see 14.5v at the bat terminal regardless if the mega fuse is blown or the battery is dead.

Anyone can confirm?

I can't confirm. I can deny that, though.

The mega fuse is inline between the alternator and the positive battery terminal. a blown fuse would keep it from charging. it would, however, also illuminate the charge indicator light at all times, as well.

Check your alternator connections, using the alternator how-to (under the duratec maintenance FAQ) for visual reference. Check the ground from the alternator to the chassis, and the connections from the battery to the chassis, and battery to the alternator.

Thanks for the tips. Is it unheard of the alternator would check out in the store, but actually fail on the car? thx.

My mechanic already stayed 4 hours later yesterday, so he's not working today. He'll be in tomorrow on it, I will update the thread when its fixed. Thx again.

Turns out, the wiring under my hood is all dried out and the insulation is flaking off everywhere. I mean every wire in the engine area is dried out and cracked and some places have bare wires. I've already invested $650 in labor and parts, it still wont charge. they want to lay new wiring from the alternator to the battery, they said this would take approx 4 hours at $68 an hour. They ran a jump from the Alternator to the battery and it started to charge, so the wiring is suspect. They cannot guarantee that replacing the wiring is going to help.

I'm coming close to a $1000 here, what is your opinions? Should i stop the insanity and call it quits? How hard is it to run wiring through? Thanks in advance.

You could just run the wiring youself. Im talking about the 1 big RED wire. Just put it in parrelle with the existing one. Cant see that taking longer then 2 hours.

BTW once a lead plate battery is left completely dead, the plates oxidize, like rust, it will never be the same. You could try charing it steady for a few days to burn off some of the crap on the plates.

WOW! I was looking through the maintenance section of the board for any ideas on how to re-run this wiring, and I found a recall notice for the harness, I called the dealer and my car falls under the recall! Man I LOVE THIS SITE! Where do I send donations to? It's about time I send some $$ your way to keep this place running.

paypal donations can be sent to
lkinley@contour.org
Snail mail donations can be sent to Lance's address, or possibly through the site Admin "Rara".

Contact either through PM for their address, I would imagine.
Donations are MORE than appreciated for this site. Without it, 99% of us would be LOST!

i just had an alternator check out ok in the store and then have a bad diode on my car. so i had to put my old alternator back on the car(so i can have flickering lights again;thats a whole other story in itself) and go back to advance auto parts to exchange it for another one. then the guy tells me that my belt tensioner could be bad so now i get to spend another $40 on a new tensioner. so now i am up to almost $1500 in 6 months on the car so far in parts and labor(of which i have done 90% of the labor).
