I wouldn't go much over $11.5 K for a '99 SVT at this point, sadly. Oh yeah - which one to get all depends on whether you can handle the SE's softer suspension. I personally think the SVT is borderline too soft as it is. Just MHO.

For the record, the leg is my daughter's and I was wondering about the missing tag myself after noticing it on LouisW's car. I just got off the phone with the credit union and they say that the SVT retail price is 14,525 but the loan value is 11,300. Again the sale price is 11,750 The SEV6 retail is 7600 and the loan value is 5500. The sale price is 6880. Both are in the ballpark.

the svt is going to be a silent killer regardless, 75% of the population have no idea what the car is. I'd go with SVT and have a ball. the premium gas means what, an extra dollar or two every time you fill up?

I guess you have a point on buying the SE and using the savings for mods. A little sleepier, but the SVT is sleepy enough. I see SE's all day long around here, while there's 700-something other Tropic Green SVT Contours in the entire world. I just kinda like having a rare car I guess.
Diggs 99 SVT Green/Tan basically stock

i smell flames coming my way, but i really cant tell that big a difference between my $4000 96 SE and my dads 11/12 thou SVT. You must keep them both below 4K RPM. Driving around town they have same power and both are good handlers. Take her to 7K and you will feel the difference alright. Execute a couple of switchbacks with the SVTs fat 16" KDWs and big brakes and you will feel the difference. You could make the SE into a 3L beast for 4K so its a tough choice...

Get the VIN # and have someone run an OASIS report for you. I am sure the previous owner just wanted the SVT badge off of the intake manifold as a souvenir of owning a might fine automobile.
I am sure the price of the SVT is somewhat negotiable, and I think you could get them to throw in a $30-45 badge if it makes the sale!
When it was my decision back in May of 2000, My Dad asked me why I couldn't just buy a regular SE with a 5spd and buy the SVT specific parts. I told him it was either the SVT or nothing (For clarification, he wasn't buying it, I am). To me thats liek wanting a WRX and settling for a RS, not an option in my book.
Just my $.02.........
