Having some problems with the ol' lawn mower I use at the cottage. The muffler was rotted out, so I decided to pull it. The shaft, naturally, stayed in the motor, broken off almost flush with the surface of the motor. Anyone have any ideas how I could remove it? I have tried liberal amounts of Liquid Wrench, Vice grips, a cold chisel -- no luck.
If I can't do it, I buy a new mower this weekend.

Might try a propane torch. Heat up the area and let the expansion of the metal break it loose. Then whack on it with the cold chisel.

I would use a large easy out and adjustable wrench to remove it. Hardware stores have them. Here is a set on eBay http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=4650756252You will need to know approximately how large the inside hole is so that you will know what size easy out to purchase. You might could bring the old muffler with you to find the right size easy out. I've seen people use 5 foot long pipes with a easy out to remove parts if the parts are frozen up.

Good idea. A little leverage goes a long way!

I think buying a new mower is the smartest bet.

it's a lawn mower. does it really make a difference if it has a muffler?? use it until it breaks and then buy another one.

Well, I couldn't get the exhaust bits out, so I broke down and bought a new mower. It made a huge difference in the time spent cutting the grass too. The mower starting right away is a nice luxury, I have to admit. No more blowing 10 minutes to get it running. More like 30 seconds now. And I went for the big rear wheels. Much easier to move around the lot. And they will come in handy if I ever dtake up lawn mower drag racing.
