x2

does anyone know if the lenses from a 35mm SLR camera will fit, and be compatable with a SLR digital??

Within the same brand they should be (ex. a Canon AF lens should work on both a 35mm SLR and DSLR). There is a slight difference, especially when using DSLRs that don't have a "full frame" sensor, but in general you should be ok.

Also note that Canon's EF-S lens series is not designed to be compatible with mounting onto their film bodies meant only for EF lens, nor onto some other EOS DSLR's. They were designed for certain members of the EOS DSLR line to provide a solution for the wide-angle end of the cropped field of view problem inherent to some DSLR's where the image sensor is smaller than a 35mm frame. The EF-S rearmost lens element protrudes further into the shutter box than an EF lens, and if jury rigged to fit onto a non-compatibe EF mount, there is risk of the mirror slapping the lens on the upswing during an exposure. Maybe there are camera-philes out there who've fashioned a solution to this...

So, short story:

Canon EF lens - Compatible with all Canon EF and (Digital-only) EF/EF-S mount bodies

Canon EF-S lens - compatible with only EF/EF-S mount bodies (Digital Rebel, XT, D20, maybe a couple more)
