Hi My 96 SE (2.5) has CEL on for codes P0420 and P1131. I've read in other posts that the 1131 code may be due to a vacuum leak, bad HO2 sensor, or dirty MAF. If its due to a bad o2 sensor, which one is it? is it the one on top (near hole for egr tube) or one at the bottom of the precat?
I have a bad main cat that I was going to replace this weekend anyway. It sounds like the honeycomb material inside the main cat is loose. If the main cat is clogged, could this be a culprit for the 420 code since the its near the bank 2 precat?
Any pics on how to inspect/clean the MAF will be much appreciated.
BTW, I got new bank 1&2 precats on ebay for $250, complete with gaskets!

If I am sure, P0420 is the Intake Manifold by the firewall, that is not working right. P1131 is the O2 sensor that need to replace. Usually the 3rd *main* cat does not go bad as fast as Bank 1 and 2 does. You can try to clean it and replace the O2 sensor first to see if it will work, however, if the same code still came out between a week to a month, then you need to replace the Intake Manifold Catalyst system. Here is the part number for the cat and gasket:
F8RZ-5G232-BC Intake Manifold Catalyst System - $369.55 XW4Z-9448-AD Gasket - $15.18

ROTFL. Is that why you keep calling it the intake manifold? The dealer typed it in wrongly on your invoice. Once again, the Precats are sometimes referred to as the EXHAUST manifolds as it is designed (and manufactured) into the exhaust manifolds.
Plugging in the part number at www.teamfordparts.com gave me this.
F8RZ5G232BC MSRP$369.55 CEG Price$274.95
Exhaust system - Manifold - Manifold
Manifold Right - Svt 1998 - 2000
F8RZ5G232BC MSRP$369.55 CEG Price$274.95
Exhaust system - Manifold - Exhaust manifold - W/front converter
W/front converter Right - Except svt 1998 - 2000

good question for you tony, how come Mystique, contour, and SVT are using the same exhaust monifold? I always thought that SVT will use performance monifold.

The intake manifolds are different (SVT versus non-SVT).
IIRC, the exhaust manifolds are the same.

Hi All,
Just an update on this issue. I changed my flexpipe and main cat and the CEL went off. The flex had a leak and the main cat's guts were loose. These may have triggered the P0420 code. I'll wait and see if the CEL comes back on...

that doesn't make any sense, the main cat is not monitored, the precats in the manifold are ...
- 95 Mystique LS - Zetec/5spd
- 99 Contour SeVT Sport - Duratec/5spd
