I was just wondering if anyone has any ideas on makeing a heat shield for a kkm or any open air element filter. I already talked with SVTJOE1 and he is interested also. I want to make something kind of like sho-shops "cold air intake". I have been experienceing Heat soak and loss of HP and I think a heat shield will help a lot. If anyone has any ideas throw 'em out. Also will taking my hood liner out help me with better cool air flow under the hood. Its just there for sound anyway, right?? This would not affect my paint is what I'm trying to ask?

The hood insulation is really there for sound. When you take that out you do hear the engine more. DOnt worry about your paint...I have gone 1.5 yearsa with no problem and I dont see a problem arising. The heat soak is a pain. I will lose to an explorer if it gets too hot under there...hmm we can try to duct some air in from the fender well or we can just make a shield to keep the heat from the trans moving on up.

Guys,How much is that MIKS heatshield?

The Miks heat sheild is $70. Too expensive if you ask me. As for directing air from the fender well, do you mean kind of like that BAT setup?

I'm looking into having mine reproduced - much more shielded than the other version and most likely cheaper.

Doesn't a shield like the one pictured above diminsish the benefits of an open element filter? It seems that it really restricts the air around the filter, making it more like a drop-in K&N.

He's running a remote air hose, so it shouldn't affect it adversely. He may loose a little low end with the hose, but when he gets above 3K rpm (like most of us do laugh ), then the car really likes it. That's coming from my own experience, FWIW.

I haven't had a heat soak problem yet but I would like some sort of heat sheild just in case. WHat if you run a hose from the front of the bumper and not connect it to the filter but just let the air flow in around the filter maybe with some sort of diffuser that will direct the air not only in the front of the filter but to the outside and with this the sheild will sort of trap the air and be pulled in by the filter. Does that make sense or is it out in left field :p eek

Here is an update from the numbers using the OBDII real-time on the IAT. With the shield in place, the IAT was 20 degrees cooler with the hood closed! Car was up to operating temp..shield off the IAT was 122F...shield on the IAT was 102F. I have yet to take a look at on the road/driving numbers. Those will come shortly.
<-snip->
Here is the info that I have. Although the numbers aren't astronomical, they do prove that a shield will dramatically reduce heat soak. I have measured a 50 degree F difference from the outside of the heat shield to the other side of the shield at the filter (KKM). It definitely aids in blocking the air the fans will blow into the intake as well.
Here are some numbers besides the temps.
Pics are here: http://photos.yahoo.com/jc_aimhigher You can also see it on the NECO site: http://www.newcougar.org

Chris A.'s car:
with the shield and hood closed: 164.0hp and 147.2lb/tq
with the shield and hood open: 166.6hp and 147.8lb/tq
Blake's car:
hmmm....hood open = 164.3 hp / 144.5 lb. ft.
hood closed = 160.4 hp / 141.6 lb. ft.
Both of these cars were built in the same month. They are both silver SVTs.
