I have a Sony Vaio with a dead mobo. It has a 1.6 GHz P4 and would like to get a mobo for it. The question is were is a good sight to find older Mobos in working condition.

That could be difficult. We had a Vaio desktop with a deadish mobo (Ethernet card blew out due to a lightning surge, as well as all PCI slots oddly) but no brand-name mobo would fit in the case since it's a proprietary case. Sony priced the replacement mobo at something like $350 .. which as you know you might as well get a new computer at that point.

I'm not going to use the Sony case. Purple isn't my style. My IDE cable connection came off the mobo 1 month after the warrenty came off.
after googleing this processor I believe that its a Northwood edition 478pin. so I think I will search for a cheap 478 soccet mobo and go from there. If it doesn't work I have a abit mobo that needs replacing any way.

If you are changing the case, this job is easy as hell.
Any Socket 478 board will work that proc. Since the 1.6 is old, you don't need to search around for anything special. (i.e. 533 or 800 FSB support, 1MB cache support, etc.)
Memory may be the only problem. I'm guessing since it is a 1.6 and Sony, at that time it probably had SDRAM and not DDR. Finding a P4 board now with SDRAM instead of DDR is tough.
You may want to consider changing the CD drives and floppy also though. Floppy may not have a face on it when removed from the case. CD drives may have a bare face also.

I have a Soyo P4VGA mobo in a computer I built 2 years or so ago. It's a socket 478, and it has BOTH DDR and SDRAM memory slots on it (can't use them both at the same time, it's either/or). It has been a rock-steady performer for me.
Here is the appropriate search info on pricegrabber.com.
Prices start at $34!!
Socket 478, SDRAM, ATX form:

Sorry about the long link, but the brackets in pricegrabber's search format screw up the URL linking.

Thanks for the help.
Yah I will be picking up another floppy drive, and the two DVD drives that came with the Sony are in another computer, 1X DVD writing yuk. I would like a file server, and figured that since I had this proc. sitting around I might as well put it to work.
