I would like to know what is the thermostat for the cooling system supposed to be in a 1996 Ford Contour GL 4 cylynders, manual 80000 miles.

The car still runs hot, after several fixes over the last few months:
- changing most oxygen sensors
- cleaning MAF
- flush cooling
- replace thermostat

Even if the temparature gage is not accurate, I notice engine stink when I park in the garage, so I believe that the engine runs too hot.

The turns on but at too high temperature on the gage, so it is possible that my mechanic put in the wrong thermostat.

At this point I'd appreciate any advice for the matter.

Thank you very much, Stefano

Sometimes this could be because of oil leaks onto the exhaust manifold. Check to make sure your oil filter is not leaking and the oil drain plug is not leaking.

It doesn't matter what you believe, until you actually measure the temp, you have no data on which to build any diagnosis. A non-contact IR thermometer will quickly and accurately tell you the tempo of the coolant at or near the thermostat housing.

Most Fords operate in the range of 195-210 F when equipped with a 190-195F thermostat. This is completely normal.

The low speed fans should kick in around 210F +/-5 followed by the high speed fans about 8-10 F higher. Failure of the low speed dropping resistor is a fairly common occurance that leads to a loss in the low speed function.

You can monitor the PCM's evaluation of the ECT with a proper OBD-II scan tool and can monitor the operation of the cooling fans.
