Can someone tell me how you change the rear brake pads on a 95 contour? I originally tried to push the piston in as in most cars but then found out you should screw it in using a special tool attachment. When I tried to use the tool attachement the piston would screw in very little, not enough to allow the new pads to fit in the caliper. Is there a special techinque to screw the piston in? Is it possible the pistons froze and need calipers to be replaced? If that was the case would the rear brakes still work or does a frozen pistion mean it won't work at all or can it be frozen only in one direction? Thank you for any advice, I hate to take it to a shop where I'll be charged an arm and a leg if I need to have calipers replaced, etc.

I have always used a pair of needle nose pliers. Push and turn at the same time - you should be able to get it in more than deep enough to get the pads on. Are you opening the bleeder screw on the caliper? It works best if you do so.

I actually bought that little tool that you add to the rachet to make it turn. I tried to loosen the nipple and it didn't help any. It is possible that the piston is locked/frozen up but then it would be unusual for both rear calipers to be locked up. One side was considerably more worn then the other (one to the metal). I'm not sure how much pressure i should be putting on it as i'm screwing it in. It just turns and doesn't move.

You have to use some force while pushing it in - as you have found spinning it by itself doesn't get it. Try pushing harder.

I agree, you need to open the bleeder screw while trying to compress the piston. Otherwise the thing won't move....at least not too far.

BS - you do NOT need to loosen the bleed screw to depress the rear pistons! That is NOT the correct way of doing it.

If he has ABS brakes, I would definitely open the bleeders, it's not good to force dirty brake fluid back up to the HCU. Plus it's the perfect time to bleed the brakes.

Never seen, heard, or have open the bleeders to change brake pads. It doesn't hurt a thing. What kinda story do you need?
