Hey gang, my son is 5' 4" and 160lbs. He's going to play football in high school next year. He realized tonight he wants to be a guard. Ok, question, what do we need to do with him over the summer to get him ready for this? I know he should really lose some weight, but also work out. Any vitamins he should be taking? Bulking stuff that won't make him fat, but help put muscle on him........everything he needs to be a linebacker or center. Thanks.

Me personally i would work on muscle mass and quickness in both the feet and hands. Most of the time the guard is going to be pulling to the left or right. I would also recommend a football camp, they happen all the time in summer. Great way for him to find what is "best" position on the field would be.
I would work on cutting out all bad sugars(pop, candy, chips) if you haven't already.
Thats all i ever did, didn't take anything to beef up, just lifted weights worked on speed everyday thru out high school. And i made all state center 2 years in a row for lowly o' SD.
Over 200,000 miles and dead......kinda. Time to get a new ride.

I'd call the high school and contact the coach to find out what he recommends.

if i am not mistaken (and i don't think i am) but Guards are usually massive guys. i know when i played left guard in high school the coach wanted me to get bigger (i was already 5'8" 225). linemen are big guys typically.

Depends on the conference you are in. I too was a guard at a massive 5'7" 175lbs, and All-Conference.
As for what to do, at his size he first must be mentally prepared to go against g uys that are most likely 30-50lbs if not more bigger than him. That's the first step. If you do not have the mental toughness or tenacity, you aren't going anywhere.
Second, I would work on leg strength. If I didn't have my legs, I would have not done squat on the line. My upper body wasn't as strong comparitvely to some of the other guys on the team. My max bench was only 270lbs.
As someone else also noted, quickness, and footwork are another essential for guards. Pulling, either trapping or to lead block on a sweep are where guards typically shine. And if you are as fast or even just a tick slower than your running back, they will love you.

LOSE some weight? I think the thinking here is that he should probably try to gain some weight, especially muscle weight.
Is this freshman football? Has he played before? I don't want to be offensive but he seems pretty small for Guard, maybe if it is the Freshman team or something he might be OK. Are the guys his age about the same size or is he a little short?
Good luck. Is he sure he wouldn't rather try receiving or kicking?
