Can anyone tell me how to check to see if my water pump is still working before it's to late?

remove it and inspect, so basically just replace it, if it is 98 or older that is, i believe that most 99 and on have the new white impellar and that one shouldn't fail

If you suspect the water pump has failed, and want to confirm, turn the heat on. If warm instead of hot air comes out, your water pump has failed. But if you can't tell, change it before it is too late.

What does the old one look like? I thought the metal impellar was the one you wanted, and the white plastic one was the one prone to breaking?

I have a 1998.5, 75,600 miles and still going on my original pump

Metal or white plastic impeller is good. Black plastic impeller is bad.

Thanks I'll give it a check next week since it doesn't take long.

I'm still getting hot air. It's just that the other morning I went to start my car and the radiator light stayed on. I then shut the car off and started it up again and it didn't stay on that time and hasn't since then. So i am worried that the water pump might be bad. How hard is it to change out.

That condition is due to the coolant sensor being overly picky about the level in the tank. Filling the coolant to be about an inch or so above the MAX line on the tank should resolve the problem. The light on the dash has nothing to do with the pump and will only light when the level of fluid drops. I can say from experience that if your pump goes, you won't know it until the coolant is gone and then the light goes on

Still, it would be a really good idea to change the pump, which in my opinion is very easy to do, especially considering I'm not all that great of a mechanic. Simply clear enough room around the pump, remove the belt, unbolt it, reverse for the new one.
