To read the codes, all you need to do is follow the instructions from previously posted thread OBDI code how to. But this will only give you the codes. A real time scan or scan of parameters which caused the codes (freeze frame) will tell you more of what could be the problem. Basically, with a freeze frame, the data shows what was happening to the engine or emissions system when the code was switched on.

As for why the car will run fine for a while after disconnecting the battery. The engine goes on a certain set of parameters at the start, then it learns what is happening and compensates for it until it can't and that is why it starts to do the "bang shift" again.

Since its a 95 you can get a cheap code reader for about $30 to read the codes. It wont display any data, but thats OK.

You will probably find code 633 (torque converter slippage) another transmission slip code. When the PCM detects slippage beyond a set tolerance it sets a code and puts the transmission into limp home mode. The 1-2 bang shift you feel is a result of limp home mode. Removing the battery clears the code and the PCM starts clean, until slippage is detected and limp home mode is activated.

This is a common problem (on OBDII cars its code P1744) with the CD4E (contour) transmission.

Do a search on P1744 in the transaxle section. I posted a fix back in june 03.

The more you drive it the more parts you will damage.

Aw, crap! What's going to die first, the car, or me in an accident?!

My tranny does the same thing after (1) driving a long distance, or (2) driving over 70 MPH for 30 seconds or more.

Can't you go to Autozone and have them check codes for you for free? I heard about something like that...

Is my car for sale? PM me if you're in South FL.
