A check engine light (reads as code 172) just appeared for me.
I got this car one week ago and it had no cel until this morning, following several hours of troubleshooting a no start condition (could be I disconnected something in the process)
The battery was disconnected most of the last 24 hours, driven 3-4 miles since last reconnect, so maybe pcm is still learning?
Have just replaced plugs, wires, air filter, fuel filter, cleaned maf, flushed radiator
any advice is appreciated.

172 (R,M) Oxygen sensor not switching - system is or was lean - Single, Right or Rear HO2S
repalce the sensor and it will correct the cel

For the V6, there are 2 for the 1995. For the 1995 I4, like yours, there is only one. From 1996 (OBDII)+, there are 4 (for V6) and 2 (for I4).

Just disconnected battery and replaced the o2 sensor, and 172 comes right back. Any ideas what to do next?

Vacuum leak? Any hissing sound in the engine bay? Check the hoses to make sure none are cracked or broken. How is the idle now?

Yes I hear a hissing sound but cannot seem to find it. I am having a new water pump, timing belt, iac, and egr valve put on by my friend next week and I'll ask him to search for it then. I've tried spraying carb cleaner all over but no dice in terms of locating it.
Aside from that, it could be that the fuel pump is going bad or a bad injector, so I just put in Lucas Fuel Injector treatment to see if that helps. A re-cleaning of the maf (first cleaned it just last week) helped smooth out the hesitation issue I had earlier, but the idle is the same. Reading through a ton of posts, it seems like maybe I should be patient until next week and hope that the egr/iac replace effects things for the better. Seems like people have had code 172 fixed in many different ways.

some progress here. I got the car 8 days ago and though it idled rough (that problem still exists) in every other way it ran great. I did my normal catch-up maint the next day, including flushing the cooling system and hosing down the radiator. Right after that I got code 172 (o2 sensor lean) and lurching behavior, which lasted 3 days and then went away and all was well.
Then today I was swapping out the ECT and a pint or so of coolant spilled out, and right after that I got code 172 again, with the lurching, again. Seems that it must be a problem with some naked wires getting wet, though interestingly the o2 sensor wires' insulation is very much intact. Not really sure what to do, but anyway.....
