I believe this is a bad idea. The screen was put there to straighten the flow so that the MAF could get a reliable reading...
.. I don't think Ford would have put it there to purposely rob horsepower. I don't see how it could hurt either, unless it's all plugged up and full of lint??

Have had mine out since I installed the 73mm MAF - any performance improvement I attributed to the MAF and not the lack of the screen, but ya never know??

My screen was taken out about 6 months after I bought the car when I installed the KKM. That was about 4 years ago.

I also removed the screen from my MAF when I installed my KKM. I left it out becasue it was difficult to put back in, plus it was cold outside, I was puttting it on chrismass morning.
After noticing my car idling a little rough and a feeling of the power comming and going while under hard acceleration, which it never did before the KKM, I decided to put it back in.
It wasn't hard to do, especially since it was alot warmer, plus I heated it up with a hair dryer too to help soften the rubber.
With a little finessing and some fancy finger work I managed to get it to fit into the KKM's MAF adapter. Then it was a little bit of a struggle to get the rubber tube that mounts the filter to the adapter to go over the screen since the parts of the screen that extend outside th adapter are slightly larger than the OD of teh adapter. I found a little vasoline on the inside of the rubber connector helps it slide together nicley. (see, it has other uses)
Once installed my only raction was, OMG, why didn't I put it on in the first place. There was a very noticable increase in low end power and the top end power was now smoother and stronger, contrary to the belief that the screen creates a resistance.
If you don't believe me try it for yourself, I'm confident you will find the same thing to be true.

Would this be worth trying to fabricate and put on a car that didn't come with a screen but now has a conical filter? Like mine?
