So I noticed some time ago that my CEL light wasn't coming on when the car was started. I have had bad 02's as well as some very major vaccum leaks (since had fixed) but while I had them I never once had the CEL come on. I took off the cluster and changed the bulb, still didnt work. Then used the bulb from one of my lights that do come on, and it still didnt work. I even tested for power and it was there. So my next question is, does the ECU supply the ground to the cluster? I've heard that may be the case. Any ideas?

Yes, it does.

Locate your EEC test connector under the hood. Locate the BK/O wire. That wire connects to a point between the PCM output (a "ground" to turn the CEL lamp on) and the CEL in the cluster.


With KOEO, measure voltage. Should be battery voltage.

YES - momentarily jumper to ground. CEL should turn on.

NO - Open circuit between VIP test connector and bulb in cluster or loss of supply voltage to bulb.

If jumpering the pin to ground turns on the lamp, then either there is an open circuit between the PCM and the test connector or the output driver in the PCM has failed.
