I just bought a 1999 LX with 101,000 miles on it. There are no records of when or if the timing belt was changed. How often is recommended or at what mileage do they usually break? Also I saw a list of Ford engines that are interference engines and the 1999 2.0 Ltr. DOHC was listed as one that if the timing belt breaks will cause major damage with valves hitting pistons. Is this true? I can't believe Ford would build another valve inference motor after all the problems they had with that on the early Escorts.

Ive always used 100k as a milestone to replace it. I have seen them last for 150k but also seen them go in 50k. Hope that helps!

I had the belt just let go on the highway.

Contour LX 2.0L ATX 180K

The repair station ( not a Ford dealer) claims this IS an interference engine and may need valve and piston work.

How can he say that?

Just taking it home to decide what to do later.

Comments?

"Baby needs new shoes."
Go to another repair shop. Tell them to change the belt or do it yourself.

Edit. Read this thread and print the instructions and pictures for them if they need it.

Click on Gates belt replacement guide. It shows that Ford 2.0 liter is not interference.
