Grrrr......

So today I'm driving through this upper middle-class neighborhood outside of Austin. I go around a curve and there are five (5) little kids playing in the street! And there are a bunch of parents standing right there! The speed limit is 30, I was going about 25 and I came to a complete stop about forty feet from the kids.

One of the mothers grabs her kid who was in the middle of the street and yells at me to slow down. WTF? I was going 25 and I stopped before I got anywhere near them! I thought about yelling at her for letting her child(ren) play in the street. Those homes all have spacious backyards and there are broad sidewalks so there is no excuse whatsoever.

So now I'm wondering.....What the hell are these people thinking? The people in that neighborhood are at least in their 30s, educated and intelligent enough to attain the degree of success needed to afford one of those homes......and yet they are naive enough to assume that everyone who drives down that street will be sober, alert and cautious. How can anyone who has spent any time on the road at all be that deluded?

So my point is this: If you have small children, please keep them out of the bleeping street! I'm not saying this because I am a road hog, I'm saying this to avoid tragedy. I was going 25 in a 30, but I have seen people going 60+ through that very neighborhood. And if someone is rolling along in an Expedition or some other vehicle that's 20 feet off the ground, holding an eyeshadow applicator in one hand and a cell phone in the other, they are not going to notice a two foot tall child in the middle of the road. So yeah......keep them out of the road please. For their sake and everyone else's.

OK. That's the end of my rant.

I grew up playing in the street.
My neighbor's kids play in the street. I like seeing it. It makes me smile. I feel bad sometimes that I'm interupting their game. At least they're not robbing my house or some crap like that.

They don't give me crap for driving 20-25 on my way home.
They realize they're in the street and they get out of the way when I come in my F350 Plus they wave and say hi. <3 that.

I don't have a problem with kids playing in the street.
Some streets it's just obvious they shouldn't play in, but side streets aren't so bad IMO.

I live in a cul-de-sac, with kids in all the houses around except my own, so there's always kids in the street.

Doesn't really bother me; but it certainly would if one of their parents said something about me driving down the street their kids where playing on. It's a street, not a yard. The kids can play there all they want, Lord knows I did when I was a kid, but it's a street first and foremost. They better move somewhat expeditiously when a car is coming.

Thank you. I could understand that mother yelling at me if I had actually been speeding, but I wasn't. And by the way she panicked and seemed surprised and the look she gave me, she totally thought of it as an extension of her yard and not a street.

The issue with that particular street is that there is a steep curve which limits visibility. I can assure you that those kids are not listening for cars and the cars don't always expect kids, so there is definite potential for trouble.

There are places kids can play in the street, and places that they shouldn't. Playing on the street near a curve is pretty stupid. I lived in a quiet neighborhood, and we'd have 8 kids playing wiffle ball in the street. We could play 7 innings and only have to move 3-4 times for cars.

There's nothing I hate more than people pointing the finger back at you when THEY were the ones that screwed up. Usually, it's some lazy fugger in a car that pulls out in front of me, proceeds to give me the finger, and drive off. I would have taken the opportunity to lash out at the parents since they were on the side of the road.

Ohhhhh.....I wanted to, but it had been a really long day and I was already in such a bad mood, I was afraid I might do something that I might regret so I bit the bullet and drove off.
