Do you really know what your combined Fed and state tax really is? It's not the feds, it's the oil companies. Federal tax on a gallon of gas is only $.184 cents per gallon. So if you don't pay the Fed tax on gas, you are still paying $2.91 a gallon if you are paying $3.09 at the street.
Indirectly, it may be the feds for allowing the oil companies to sell a gallon for what they do, but as for actual revenues going to the fed across the country, its only $.184 pennies a gallon.
P.S.- you are probably paying more state tax per gallon than federal tax.
