Yeah, that is why I recommend re-installing the heat shielding as I did on my own.

Believe Terry and Warmonger, my oil is about 250 when I let the revs run about 4-5k, sustained. not good. I have a custom Y-pipe without the heat shielding. Even when the ambient temp is in the 30s, I'm hitting 250ish! Now, I need to get an aftermarket air to oil cooler. Be careful and reuse that shielding!

Chris, I'd try thermal wrap tape first... But then again you did not take the easy way out on your car up to date...

Does this mean that the SHO Y Pipe is likely to cause overheating oil? Can the heat from the Y pipe effect the temp of the oil in the sump?

With all the posts before about custom and aftermarket y pipes, this is the first time I have heard anything regarding heat problems, although it makes sense. Thanks for the heads up.

That exhaust in the y-pipe is probably 600 C at least under full throttle, and it is only an inch or two away from the pan. warmonger

Damn,
I was going to re-fit my SHO Y pipe this weekend, I'll have to think again.......
Presumably, this problem also applies to the MSDS header & Y pipe set up?

The stock Y pipe is insulated for that reason, early tests on CDW showed high oil temps but as most pople wont fit an oill temp gage or fit it in the wrong place, they never know,50% of this engines cooling is via the oil.The Modine style cooler is not enough when you mod the motor,in the worse case an oil/air extra cooler is needed with an oilstat.....

If your modfying the stock Y pipe, you can leave about 90% of the heat shielding on. You only loose the part by the merge/180. The idea of using thermal wrap tape for exposed sections close to the oil pan sounds like a good idea. I think I just got a project for the weekend....
