I don't appreciate my money being wasted (especially when I'm paying out of state tuition)...

This may not be a "reportable" situation, but I'll provide the details anyway.

I have a professor who assigned chapter readings from a textbook at the beginning of the semester. All this person has done EVERY class session is show overhead projection notes directly from the assigned reading. On top of this, the professor utilizes (as stated in her syllabus) a strict attendance policy, which drops your grade after every so many absences...despite that attending class is not beneficial if you've read the "OUTSIDE OF CLASS" readings.

Is there anything I can do to report the uselessness of this professor's class (as I can succeed just as easily without enrolling by simply picking up the book and reading it). Can I make a difference with the attendance policy?

I know both are extreme longshots, but at the very least I plan on sending a letter to the college's dean. I'm sure he won't be satisfied to hear the the students would gain just as much knowledge if a chimp were teaching the class (well, maybe not, since the majority of the students appear to be fully enthralled with her lectures, while I sit and do crossword puzzles the entire time).

a letter to the dean is probably the best you can do, as they'll likely talk to the professor, at least, depending on what exactly you say in the letter.
other than that, it doesn't really sound like the prof. is doing anything entirely too wrong, so there's no real justification for a filed cimplaint.

If it's not reportable, maybe at the least I could apply for the position since it can't require any credentials.

Is this your first year in college? Get used to it. Thats not even the worst thing!

My accounting class, he assigns us problems to do for the next class. which means we should read the chapter and do the homework and then he answers questions we may have. Well the kicker is that he goes over in detail every problem you need to do for the homework, so its not necessary to even do it to begin with!

Hes also the most lenient test grader ever, i did probably about 30% effort on a test and got an 85%!

Woot for Kollege!

PS, oh but dont worry as soon as you get used to teachers like this you will get a complete nazi.... you get your moneys worth with them.

Welcome to all to many of the courses that you're likely to have. Unfortunately that's just the way that it goes; particularly the first year or two. I had to go to school an entire extra semester to retake classes that I "Failed" due to attendance even though I had an "A" and often even the highest, grade in the entire class.

If you do wish to file some sort of complaint, I would simply start with either the Department head or, if you get nothing there, the Dean/Chair of your College/School (assuming you have multipe colleges in your university, I don't mean the head guy of your entire university). A Department head is much more likely to be receptive of your concerns and actually in a place to do something about it.

On a side note, I swear that's a negative correlation between a college course with an Attendance policy and the quality of your education in that course.

If you see dropping grades due to attendance on the syllabus, chances are you've got a [censored] professor. They know that, without it, their class would be insultingly deserted. And the hard professors know that, without coming to their class, you're probably not going to pass anyways.

I'm pretty sure the professor has to get his/her syllabus approved before the semester begins. At least that's how it was at my college.

We had one professor that was obviously PMS driven. She did some crazy stuff. We collectively reported her to the Dean. We were taken very seriously (Honors course, so that probably helped).
We held a meeting between the entire class, the professor and administrators and hammered out our problems.
She didn't eff up anymore after that.

I wish I could recall exactly what kind of crap she was pulling that made us report her.

Your situation doesn't seem too bad, IMO. I had a bunch of classes like that.

I'd rather have a Nazi than this uneducation...

And no, I'm not a freshman. I'm a senior. I'm finally getting sick to my stomach with all the apathetic teaching methods.

I'm actually more disturbed with the attendance policy than what goes on in the professor's class. The only purpose for it I can conclude is to mask the real problems with the professors.
