I have a 1999 Contour SE with the V-6 engine. Put an AAMCO transmission in it a year ago - AAMCO replaced it three times under warranty (i.e. free) before it got a good one from its rebuilder.

About three months ago the starter sounded like the Bendix clutch wasn't engaging: rapid spinning and screeching noise but no turning of the engine. Replaced starter....same problem developed. Replaced starter again....same problem resurfaced.

It doesn't always happen...and after two or three "false starts" it will engage and crank the engine right up. Some times it starts right up on the first try.

Questions: I think the flywheel has lost a tooth or two:

- Is this the likely cause or is there some other quirk I should look for?

- Is the flywheel bolted to the back of the engine or the front of the tranny? (This makes a difference as to whether the repair is on me or on AAMCO - I'm afraid it's on the engine but thought I'd ask).

Thanks in advance!

Bill

Thanks Tony, Now that I know that I can call around and see where I can get it changed most economically...

Sigh.

Depends on where you are located, some CEGers might be able to do it cheaper than most shops. Post in the local forum/branch and see if you get a response there.

OK will do - Thanks for the tip.

I live in Calvert Co. MD about 20 miles Southeast of Washington DC and work up near BWI airport.
