I had written before about a tranny problem I've been having were it seems to to not know what gear to be in. I was told it was probably the Manual lever position sensor. The first question I have. Is this the right name, I looked in my Haynes book and the only thing I found was Selector lever position sensor, are these the same thing?
Next thing. When I went to check to see were the sensor was I disconnected the Inhibitor switch multi-plug by mistake. When I did this my check engine light shut off (it was on) and now the O/D light flashes. The car seems drive just in 3rd gear. But there is no sign of any sliping from gear into another. My questions here are what is the Inhibitor switch and can this be the cause of my problems? Thanks for any help
P.S. I know I need to get the codes, but I havn't had the chance.

Probably. The Haynes authors are idiots who didn't bother to read the Ford documentation or SAE directive J1930 first....
Okay, what is an "inhibitor switch multi-plug"???? Another Haynes creation??>
What year???

YES. And to add to your confusion, it is also known as the Transmission Range Sensor.
"When I went to check to see were the sensor was I disconnected the Inhibitor switch multi-plug by mistake. When I did this my check engine light shut off (it was on) and now the O/D light flashes. The car seems drive just in 3rd gear. But there is no sign of any sliping from gear into another."
Disconnect the battery and plug the Inhibitor switch multi-plug back in. You should have disconnected the battery before working on the MLPS.
"My questions here are what is the Inhibitor switch and can this be the cause of my problems?"
Not exactly sure what this is but I would guess that it is the electrical connector for the MLPS. If any of these get wet, you tend to have tranny issues.
Some British terms were used on the Haynes Manual as the tear down for the I-4 Zetec was from a Mondeo (probably 1995) and done in Britain.
The tear down for the V6 Duratec is a 1995 Contour .

So does anyone know what the inhibitor switch is? And what it does? I Think it has something to do with the O/D.

Other than the TR (Transmission Range) Sensor (aka MLPS - Manual Lever Position Switch), there are no switches on or in the CD4E.
The O/D cancel switch is mounted on the shift lever. It is not required for normal operation. It is a momentary contact switch that, when pressed, tells the PCM that the drivers wishes to lock out overdrive. The PCM then implements a contol strategy that disengages O/D or keeps it from engaging, depending on current driving conditions.

I'm not sure what the real name is, but according to the Haynes book it is the "inhibitor switch multi-plug". It is located on the top of the transaxle. It is round and has about 6 pins on the inside. I thought it might be the main connector for the tranny but I don't know.

Your description sounds like the MLPS (manual lever position sensor).
Before computer controlled transmissions a similar device was know as a neutral safety switch. It prevented the engine from starting unless the trans was in park or neutral. Perhaps the British term for safety switch "inhibitor switch". After all, they call a hood a "bonnett".

The TR sensor is bolted to the top of the tranny where the shifter cable attaches. It has a rectangular connector housing with 10 connector pins.
The round connector on the top of the transmission case should have 10 connector pins and is the electrical connecotr for the internal solenois and the TOT sensor.
Look closer at the connector pin count.

The trans range sensor is just another term for the MLPS.

Well, the one I disconnected was the round one (I wasn't sure how many pins where there.) But for the life of me I can't find the MLPS.
